Monthly scooter rental in Chiang Mai: the digital nomad's guide

Stay in Chiang Mai longer than a couple of weeks and daily scooter rates stop making sense. Monthly rental is the standard move for digital nomads and slow travellers: a fraction of the daily price, one bike that becomes yours for the season, and no paperwork beyond the first day.
This guide covers what a month actually costs, what is and is not included, and the questions that separate a great long-term deal from a slow-motion argument.
Monthly prices in 2026
Monthly rates run roughly a third of what thirty daily rentals would cost. Realistic ranges from reputable Chiang Mai shops:
- Honda Click 125 / Yamaha Fino / Scoopy: 2,500 to 3,500 THB per month
- Yamaha NMAX 155 / Honda PCX 160: 4,000 to 5,500 THB per month
- Honda Forza 350 and maxi-scooters: 9,000 to 13,000 THB per month
- Multi-month stays: expect 10 to 20 percent off from month two or three, always ask
- High season (December, January) firms prices up, green season softens them
What a monthly contract should include
The good shops treat monthly renters as their favourite customers: predictable income, careful riders. A fair monthly deal includes:
- Routine maintenance: oil changes and normal wear (brake pads, bulbs) on the shop, not you
- A replacement bike while yours is serviced, or a same-day swap if something breaks
- Insurance with the excess stated in writing, exactly as for daily rentals
- Two helmets on request, and a phone holder if you ask nicely
- A cash deposit of 2,000 to 5,000 THB, or a signed agreement, never your passport
Your responsibilities (the honest list)
Long-term renting comes with light duties: fuel obviously, tyre punctures (any roadside shop fixes one for 50 to 100 THB), keeping the bike locked at night, and washing it occasionally is good karma. Report odd noises early instead of riding them into real damage, the shop will thank you and fix them free.
Check the odometer rule before signing: most monthly deals are unlimited-kilometre, a few cap you. Riding the Mae Hong Son Loop on a capped contract is an avoidable argument.
Rent or buy? The 6-month maths
Nomads staying half a year always ask. Buying a used Click for around 25,000 to 35,000 THB and reselling can beat renting on paper, but the paper hides the friction: a foreigner needs the green book transferred properly (many sales skip it, leaving you unable to prove ownership), insurance is on you, maintenance is on you, and reselling on a deadline means accepting a haircut.
Under six months, rent. Beyond a year with residency paperwork sorted, buying starts winning. In between, the answer is whichever risk you would rather manage: a monthly bill or an exit sale.

Do monthly rentals include maintenance?
From good shops, yes: oil, normal wear and a replacement bike during service. Confirm it before paying, it is the single biggest quality difference between shops.
Can I take a monthly rental on the Mae Hong Son Loop?
Usually yes, and it is the best-value way to do the loop. Tell the shop your plans and confirm there is no kilometre cap. Some shops ask you to skip serious off-road, which is fair on a street scooter.
Do I still need a licence and IDP for a monthly rental?
Yes, identical rules to daily rental: home motorcycle licence plus IDP with the motorcycle category. Staying longer actually raises your odds of meeting a checkpoint, and your insurance depends on it.
