Scooter rental deposits in Chiang Mai: what to agree

Updated October 2026 · RideLanna editorial team

Book a scooter

The refundable deposit affects how much money you need at handover, even though it is separate from the rental charge. Check the displayed amount before requesting a scooter, then agree how the shop will receive and return it.

RideLanna does not hold your deposit or collect rental payment online. The selected shop’s accepted terms and your payment record are the starting points for any later question.

Separate four amounts in your budget

Write down the rental total, refundable deposit, selected delivery charge and any insurance excess. They serve different purposes. The excess is potential liability under the insurance terms, while the deposit is security handled by the shop; neither should be added to the daily rate as though it were automatically a rental fee.

A no-passport-deposit policy means your original passport stays with you. A cash deposit and identity verification can still be required. Check the actual offer instead of inferring a zero deposit from that policy.

  • Rental and selected options: the agreed charge for the booking.
  • Deposit: the separate security amount and refund conditions.
  • Insurance excess: the policy amount and exclusions to read.
  • Payment method: confirm what the shop accepts before arrival.

Get a clear deposit record

Ask for a receipt or written acknowledgement showing the amount, date and booking or vehicle reference. Keep it with the accepted rental terms. If the payment and refund methods differ, establish that before handing over money.

Record the scooter’s starting condition with the shop. Save agreed photos or notes about existing marks, the fuel level and supplied equipment. These records help both parties compare the same starting point at return.

Agree how the return check will work

Arrange a return appointment with time to inspect the scooter together and settle the deposit. Ask which fuel, late-return, missing-equipment or damage deductions the written terms allow and how any amount would be explained.

If your departure is early, settle the return process before booking rather than leaving the keys and expecting an immediate remote refund. A delivery option does not establish the collection or deposit-return method.

Handle a disagreement with records

Ask the shop to explain a proposed deduction and identify the relevant rental term. Compare the recorded condition and payment evidence together. Keep the conversation and any receipts with your booking.

You can report a problem through your RideLanna booking. Reporting records the issue for support; it does not automatically resolve liability or issue a refund. The platform does not hold a deposit it can release to either party.

Good questions.
Clear answers.

Is the deposit included in the rental total?

It is displayed separately. Budget for it at handover and agree the refund process directly with the shop.

Does a deposit cap my damage liability?

Do not assume that. Read the accepted rental and insurance terms, including excess and exclusions.

Can the shop keep my original passport instead?

RideLanna’s policy is that partners must not retain an original passport as collateral. Contact the shop and RideLanna if the handover differs from that policy.
